Percutaneous Laser Disc Decompression (PLDD)
A Modern Laser Spine Solution for Back Pain
Percutaneous Laser Disc Decompression (PLDD) is an advanced, outpatient laser therapy used to treat symptomatic herniated discs. It’s considered “minimally invasive” because it doesn’t require large incisions. Instead, our surgeons use the focused energy of a laser to reduce pressure inside a damaged disc, relieving the painful pressure on surrounding nerves. It’s a cutting-edge alternative to traditional open-back surgery.
Understanding PLDD (What is it?)
Is PLDD Right for You?
PLDD is an excellent option for patients who suffer from chronic pain, sciatica, or radiating limb pain caused by a contained herniated disc. It’s typically recommended after conservative treatments like physical therapy or medication haven’t provided enough relief. Your candidacy is confirmed during a pre-travel teleconsultation where our specialists review your medical studies.
Preparing for Your PLDD Procedure
Your journey to relief begins before you even arrive in Los Cabos. Preparation starts with your initial teleconsultation, where we create your personalized treatment protocol. Ahead of your appointment, our team will provide specific instructions, which typically include fasting for a few hours and discussing any medications you are currently taking to ensure everything is perfectly aligned for your procedure.
What to Expect During Your Procedure
Your comfort and safety are our top priorities. The procedure itself is performed in a sterile suite at our clinic and is surprisingly quick, taking only 15-30 minutes. A certified anesthesiologist will administer light IV sedation and local anesthetic to ensure you are completely relaxed and comfortable, which is a significant advantage for our international patients. Your surgeon then uses precision imaging to guide a very thin needle into the affected disc. A laser fiber is passed through the needle, and a precise amount of energy is applied to gently vaporize a tiny portion of the disc, instantly relieving the pressure on the nerve.
Caring For Yourself After the Procedure
Post-operative care is simple and designed to be managed from your hotel or villa. You will need to keep the small puncture sites clean and dry, changing the dressing every third day. If the area gets wet, gently pat it dry without rubbing. It’s important to avoid baths or swimming pools for the first week to allow the sites to heal properly. Our medical team will prescribe a course of medication, including a prophylactic oral antibiotic for one week, along with analgesics like paracetamol or ibuprofen for any discomfort.
Your Recovery Journey in Los Cabos
Because PLDD is minimally invasive, you can rest and recover in a comfortable, relaxed setting, not a hospital. No hospital stay is required, as you will be ready to leave our clinic’s recovery area just 1-2 hours after your sedation wears off. For your safety and to ensure the best results, our medical tourism packages require a minimum stay of 6 nights in Los Cabos for post-operative supervision. You should plan for relative rest during the first 2-3 days. After that initial period, you are encouraged to begin taking light walks, starting around day 7. For 10–14 days, it is crucial to avoid any vigorous exercise, bicycling, prolonged travel, or lifting anything heavier than 5 kg (about 11 lbs). We will monitor your progress with daily remote check-ins and an in-person evaluation on day 7 to assess your strength, mobility, and pain levels.
What to Expect as You Heal
It is normal to experience some mild symptoms as your body heals and the nerve recovers. These are not signs of complications but are expected parts of the healing process. You may feel temporary numbness, burning, or tingling in one of your legs. Minor cramps, a slight feeling of weakness, or a small bruise at the puncture site are also common.
However, you should contact our team immediately if you develop a fever higher than 38°C (100.4°F), experience severe pain that isn’t controlled by medication, or have significant difficulty walking.
A Return to a Life Without Limits
The ultimate goal of PLDD is to give you your life back. By resolving the nerve compression that causes chronic pain, this procedure allows you to dramatically reduce or even eliminate your reliance on pain medication. It empowers you to move with comfort and confidence, returning to the activities and lifestyle you love.
